A Few Achievable Adjustments (Not Resolutions) For 2012

2011 was a year of great progress and changes. I don’t believe in resolutions because I feel that they are too laden with pressure and high expectations. Instead I try to see where I want to make small adjustments to my life and go from there. So here is my short list in no particular order of what I want to adjust.

Accept (even love) my body now while not losing focus on my goals —You would think that being engaged to a fit bodybuilder who is younger than me would propel me into a fitness craze, and it did for a while but ironically although I toned up, I didn’t really lose weight. Why? because I wasn’t really seeing myself clearly. I still had the image in my mind of what I looked like 10lbs ago and therefore allowed the weight to creep in. Not this year… slowly but surely.

Wear more of what you love — I love skirts, I always buy them but I never wear them. Skirts with a bit of a flounce are very flattering but out of habit they stay dormant in my closet. So in 2012 I plan to wear more skirts or anything else that makes me feel good.

Savor wine for special occasions — Wine is popular in my family, a little too popular. I drink moderately but not necessarily consciously. I want adjust this and drink only when it’s a special occasion or I really consciously want it instead of just a reward after the kids finally get to bed.

Fill my plate with color — I also don’t believe in diets because for me they don’t really work. I rebel against the restrictions. I eat super healthy already but I still have some extra pounds that make me feel sluggish. So this year I’m going to fill my plate with vegetables and fruit of all colors. For those few vegetables I haven’t grown to love yet, I want to seek out recipes until I find a way to cook them in the most delicious way possible

Eat more sustainable, affordable food — I want to use my cooking skills to make more meals that are both sustainable and affordable such as with dried beans/lentils, eggs, small fish like sardines and whole grains

Save more, spend less — We all want this right? I’m pretty frugal these days but there is always room for improvement and my challenge is not when times are lean but not spending when the money seems to be pouring in. Having my own business means there are a lot of ups and downs.

Consider others before myself — Just like as a mother I take care of my kids before myself, I want to treat others this way whenever possible.

Honor the special relationships in my life – It is easy to honor the love relationship in your life, even your kids, but to honor all the relationships that are positive: friendships, even those that you see the friend infrequently, business relationships however small, I want to remember to be grateful for everyone who is a positive part of my life.
